Time has come to consolidate all my miniblogging/webIM services. There’s no sense in updating them all separately, especially if there’s a way to update only one and have them all display these updates. Here’s how I did it.
I’m going to actively post to Pownce. It’s a matter of personal preference, although have in mind that you’re going to have a hard time doing it the other way round since Pownce doesn’t support RSS feed import. To find your Pownce RSS feed go to the following URL:
http://www.pownce.com/feeds/public/username/
In my case it’s:
http://www.pownce.com/feeds/public/frantic/
Now, register with Twitterfeed. If you don’t have an OpenID you can get one over at MyOpenID - you’re going to need it sooner or later anyway. Create a new feed in Twitterfeed and add the Pownce feed to it; make sure to uncheck the “Include description” checkbox, and set the update interval to 30 minutes (you can set it to be longer, but we want our updates to be up-to-date, right?).

However, Pownce and Twitter aren’t enough for me; I want to add Tumblr and Jaiku into the mix. The problem with Tumblr is that it won’t recognize the Pownce feed. No worries, though, go to the Twitter feed you’ve forwarded your Pownce feed to, click the RSS icon and add that feed to Tumblr (as text).

Finally, open up your Jaiku profile, click on Feeds (Edit) and add an RSS feed. You can use the Pownce feed or the Twitter feed - they both work pretty much the same.

That’s it - by posting on Pownce you now automatically update all four services at the same time. Now, if only someone would create a Miranda Pownce plugin…
Btw, my Pownce/Twitter/Jaiku/Tumblr stream is a lightweight combination of some posts from FranticIndustries and some of my personal thoughts. If you’d like to follow any of them, here are the links: Pownce, Twitter, Jaiku and Tumblr.

Great, now just show me a Java client for my Blackberry to post and track all of this.
This is the solution to what I’d been pondering, except that it means switching to Pownce for my main thing… not sure if I’m ready to do that yet! LOL
Nice summary, thanks! I’d been using a netvibes page to agregate Twitter and Jaiku feeds, and posting to both with TwitKu. This brings it all together, though I do wish that Pownce supported RSS — it would make things easier!
Thanks for the info. We gave you some press to our audience: Post Your Thoughts to Jaiku, Pownce, Tumblr and Twitter at The Same Time.
Useful guide, Stan, but I’m not so sure Pownce is supposed to be posted to as often as Twitter. Or, at least as often as I tweet.
Still, I’ve bookmarked it just in case I slow down on Twitter and feel it necessary to bridge the three.
Using Pownce for your base posts and using Twitterfeed is NOT the best solution. At present the latest Twitterfeed will ping any feed (Pownce or otherwise) is 30 minutes. WAY TOO LONG for urgent messages such as Earthquakes or other immediate happenings. Sorry. Sticking with Twitter as my base and spreading the word out for there. Just not drinking the Pownce cool-aid.
It is not the best way to do it. . .I’ll agree, but it does work.

I love Tumblr, but decided not to send my Twitter feed to it. Tends to add too much noise. I treat my Tumblelog differently than Twitter/Pownce. I cancelled by Jaiku account just to prove I could leave a network
@everyone: thanks for the input
@Robert: earthquakes? on Twitter? (: And, you’re right about the delay - however, I didn’t find any way to remedy that, so I posted the best way to do this I could find.
Terrible. That’s all I can say. You have four beautiful platforms, meaning you could provide individual services on each of them. Instead you treat them all the same and flood the web with four times the same content. Some would call that spamming. If you don’t have time to update four of them, maybe that means you should update less of them.
@Vincent: Normally, I wouldn’t use all those 4 services. I’d use only one. But with this approach, I’m giving users of all 4 services a way to follow what I’m doing.
I understand that you can see this as spamming, but have in mind that these are very specific services that are based on attention. For example, I would never take my blog’s RSS feed and create 50 other blogs with the same content. That would be spamming. But services like Twitter and Tumblr have the option of importing an RSS feed precisely because they’re created to be used in this way.
Or, look at it from my perspective. I see Pownce and Twitter as virtually identical services. I have three choices: I can either post the same stuff two times, once on Pownce and once on Twitter; I can choose to leave one of these two behind, or I can do what I did - post to both at the same time. I leave it up to everyone to make their own choice, but I chose the third option because it makes the most sense to me.
@Stan Schroeder: Agreed, Twitter & Pownce seem to be virtually the same, except for the audience. If you have only one thing to say to all audiences, then aggregating them makes sense. If, however, you wish to cultivate different audiences on different channels, then separation makes sense.
Hmmm, what is it with new online platforms and their lack of vows: Tumblr. Streakr, Flickr. At least Twitter is keeping it real.
For posting Twitter updates to Tumblr, two tips. First, import them as text without titles and it’ll look much cleaner. Second, judicious use of Yahoo Pipes can clean up the appearance of the feed a little more. I actually built a very simple pipe for this purpose which you can examine; it can be found here http://snipr.com/1fh4z .
@Nathan: thanks, much appreciated. I had the idea of “piping” out these feeds but I just didn’t have the time.
That is similar to what I do. Cool.

Is there really no way to hack Pownce to suck up a newsfeed in the same way that twitterfeed allows us to do with twitter?

Any chance that you have any invites for Jaiku left that you’d like to share? I would appreciate it greatly. I have GrandCentral invites if anyone is in need!
In a good way,

Not sure if you know, but you can IM into Pownce via IMified.com
