Turn a 2D image into 3D with Fotowoosh

Fotowoosh is a service that can turn any 2D photograph or image into 3D. It’s currently in invite-only beta stage, which means that you won’t be able to turn your entire summer vacation into 3D just yet, but several samples are available (to see them, you must install the appropriate software or Firefox plugin from Cortona) and some of them are looking great.

Why some of them, why not all of them? The thing is, Fotowoosh does quite a simplistic 3D rendering, and it works well with photograph of open spaces; a road, a building, and lots of sky is ideal; a dark room with a bunch of stuff in it, not so much.

If you go too deep, the image can quickly become very distorted

If this type of thing were to show up before the Web 2.0 revolution I’d instantly disregard it as a fun novelty which will never be used anywhere. But now, if Freewebs - the company behind Fotowoosh - plays its card right, and works with social networks like Flickr and MySpace, including simple plugins for creating and viewing 3D images on these sites, it could be a hit.

You can see the video here. Oh yes, if you like this sort of thing, you might want to check out Microsoft’s Photosynth, too, which we covered earlier.
