Quick tip: multiple Google Talk accounts in Miranda

One of the reasons I use Miranda is because it enables me to have all my IM accounts in one place. However, I’ve felt the need to use multiple instances of the same protocol. For example, I have several Gmail accounts, which means several different Google Talk identities. In Miranda’s options there is no obvious option to add another account instance of the same protocol - in this case Jabber - to your profile.

The solution, however, is quite simple. Miranda treats support for different protocols (IRC, ICQ, AIM, MSN, AOL, Jabber) as plugins, and they’re situated in Miranda’s plugins directory in the form of .dll files. If you want to use several accounts of the same protocol at the same time, all you have to do is copy the .dll file to another directory, rename it (preferably to something you’ll be able to recognize later), and copy it back to the plugins directory. Restart Miranda, go to Main Menu - Options, and tweak the settings for the new account.

There’s also a chance that you might not have known that Google Talk supports Jabber and thus can be used in Miranda at all. In this case, I suggest you go to Google’s official Google Talk FAQ and see the entire procedure there first.
