Poor Man’s GPS On The iPhone? Yeah, It’s Called A-GPS

I’m not calling anyone out here, but I hate it when some technology that’s been around for a while is suddenly touted as a new thing in conjunction with the iPhone.

AppleInsider talks about Google’s new feature called My Location, which shows your location on Google Maps by calculating your position based on the mobile base unit you’re currently connected to. It’s a cool feature if GPS is not essential to you, and it could be used as a “poor man’s GPS” on the iPhone, but it’s not new. It’s called Assisted GPS and it’s already incorporated in some GSM phones, for example Nokia N95.

As far as My Location goes, it’s a clever implementation of the same principle. Check out the video presentation below:

It seems quite unreliable. It works reasonably well where I live, locating me within 1km on the edge of a small town in England, but in many other locations including a major city centre, an outlying rural area and a motorway, it fails saying “your location is temporarily unavailable”. In several other towns, it can only locate within 5km, which isn’t really accurate enough. This is all on the British 3G network known as 3, so it could be an issue with that particular operator, but it’s not good.

I followed this on several sites for about 6 months. I finally bought it on Amazon for about $266, the lowest it seemed to go even though it’s been on the market for a while. I did get a credit during a price drop, and shipping was free, so I am satisfied as far as cost.

Amazon has a feature comparison grid for its Garmin nuviis which I found very helpful and referred to it often during my 6 month process. What I decided I needed after mentally toying with the numerous options was a 4.3 screen and text-to-speech. I am totally satisfied with both. I cannot imagine looking at a smaller screen, nor trying to find a place for a larger screen. Voice directions are excellent. However, there is a hint of disparagement in the voice when it says, “Recalculating, recalculating” if I choose a route I am familiar with.

I have the most current maps of the US. However, I could not receive understandable directions near Greensboro, NC airport (it kept trying to send me in circles) nor in my own long established residential neighborhood. (It sent me 12 miles out of my way to get home; trying it my way a second time it continued to shout “recalculating” until I was almost in my driveway.) Chicago airport and suburbs, and Charlotte, NC - great directions.

There were no directions for using this. Now that I have purchased an AC adaptor so I can recharge at home, I will play with the menu choices. Maybe the lousy directions were because of a choice I made.

My nuvi came only with a car charger. I had to buy an AC adaptor, usb connector and carrying case.

The screen is very bright and viewable. I do not use a holder because it takes up too much space and from what I’ve read could be a thief magnet. I keep the nuvi plugged into the car charger and sit it on the seat next to me. There is no need to look at the screen while driving because the voice directions are so good and give so much warning for turns, etc. Sometimes the voice says “turn left/right” etc without a street name. On a multi-lane highway or road that splits off what that means is “Stay in the left lanes” or “bear right”, etc. Just pay attention for a little while for different types of roadways. It all makes sense and is a consistent usage of terms.

It can take several minutes to catch the satellites, no matter where I am. (It has never dropped the satellites once acquired.) Maybe that is because this is an older model? Other than that, I can see why this model has been around so long and the price is so darned stable.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.

Hello. This is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time Thanks for any help you can offer here.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.Have you tried the ipad? you can get one free at FreshGiftCard.com

  15. Luther Hock Says:

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
