Simply because how easy they can be manipulated, even on a relatively large scale. In this day and age, I think the only two metrics that should matter are vistors and feed-subscribers. Well, that's not true, there are several other things that can be used to define the popularity and authority of a site, but for the sake of simplicity, I like to narrow it down to those two ;) Pageviews are useless as a metric of popularity, and always have. Simply because how easy they can be manipulated, even on a relatively large scale.
