Facebook Ads Is No AdSense Killer

Facebook Ads and Facebook Pages, which have just been announced, are basically fancy names for the fact that Facebook is now making it easier for companies to create their own pages and promote their brands and products through Facebook.

From the official press release:

Today, Facebook Ads launched with three parts: a way for businesses to build pages on Facebook to connect with their audiences; an ad system that facilitates the spread of brand messages virally through Facebook Social Ads™; and an interface to gather insights into people’s activity on Facebook that marketers care about.

Just like Adam at Mashable has noticed, this really doesn’t sound that exciting, especially from the user’s perspective. It probably translates to “spam, and lots of it”.

The companies seem to be interested, though, since approximately 100.000 Facebook pages went online today. But, the effectiveness of this advertising channel is yet to be seen. In any case, I doubt this will prove to be the AdSense killer everyone was expecting from Facebook. Sure, the clickthroughs might be a little bigger than regular ads, but expecting that users will add companies as friends and thus contribute “virally” to their promotion seems a bit utopian.

I’ve just done a post about how to exploit Facebook for revenue. Basiclaly it boils down to creating a nifty app then either putting ads on it or running affiliations through it like Amazon.

As an internet marketer for a medium-sized business, I have been playing with the pages on Facebook and I honestly haven’t found it absolutely useful aside from ensuring some form of presence. I have yet to test the social advertising out but I currently feel that it is much tougher for smaller to medium-sized businesses to encourage people to check out the page. Granted it is all about viral marketing, but the intentions of people on Facebook are very different than the general world wide web. Those are my initial feelings so far … we’ll see how it goes.

Very interesting way to market on facebook. I also found a way to automate several very powerful methods of getting users. You can harvest ID by groups or pages or wall posts with this program. Then once you have the IDs you can do a friend add to your user ID or sudo profile. This by passes the captcha codes too. There is also a cool chat program that you can setup scripts and keyword to work with. This program, when I use it I can see a spike in my site traffic. It is amazing…
