Take That, RIAA!
First Nine Inch Nails, then Radiohead, now Madonna. In short, Madonna is no longer - at least officially - a part of the record industry, and she signed a 134 million dollar deal with Live Nation to distribute her next three albums, support her live shows and all that accompanies them.
Damn, I like the direction where all this is heading. It’s no secret that I loathe RIAA’s ‘methods’ against ‘piracy’, and that I’m all for free sharing of music; you can read more about it here, here, and here.
But now, for the first time, the big names that were until recently a part of that huge machinery of greed we call the record industry, are taking a different path. And it all comes right after RIAA’s win in a lawsuit against a mom who downloaded a handful of songs from some P2P service. Talk about Pyrrhic victory, right?
In any case, this news is especially significant because it’s Madonna. She’s huge, she’s a trendsetter, and she knows when to switch trains: that’s why she lasted so long. I sincerely hope that, once again, she’ll be starting a trend with her example.

Madonna’s deal with Live Nation is the exact opposite of what artists like Radiohead and NIN are doing by selling their own music. Madonna is simply leaving Warner Music for a much bigger, more powerful company that will control not only her music, but her merchandise and concerts.
Live Nation is a spin off of Clear Channel - the massive monopoly of everything from radiowaves to outdoor advertising - the Clear Channel that blacklisted John Lennon’s Imagine in the wake of 9/11 and has censored criticism of Bush.
Recently Live Nation had YouTube take down all of the fan videos of live concerts managed by them.
Not exactly my vision of the future of the music industry.

@ok: it’s important that the business model is different. I agree that it’s not groundbreaking news, but in the context of recent events (Radiohead, Oasis, etc.) it’s another small stone that might start an avalanche.

Live Nation’s business model is just the RIAA on steroids. Live Nation, Clear Channel and Ticketmaster are all in bed together, and all three represent stifling oppressive control of both artists and consumers.

@ok: duly noted (;.

I wouldn’t say Ticketmaster is in bet with them anymore.
“It’s unlikely Ticketmaster’s ticketing relationship with Live Nation will be renewed when it expires at the end of next year, based on an internal Ticketmaster memo obtained by Billboard.biz.
The memo states, in part, “While it has been our sincere desire to create a new long term partnership [with Live Nation], we now believe it is doubtful we will extend our agreement when it expires at the end of 2008. Live Nation has been a valued client for a very long time and we believe we’ve taken every reasonable step possible to facilitate a renewal, but they seem intent on a direction for their business that leaves us no viable way to work together.”"

You would think that they world have OK’d it at the beginning instead of allowing it to go so long without saying a thing and then bringing it back up when it was too late. I don’t understand it at all. Vigorelle

Some time back, my 3-year old computer was running so slow that I had to buy a new computer. Or at least I thought I needed a new computer. Then within a matter of weeks of surfing on the Internet, my new computer was also running so slowly. In addition, some programs did not run well on my computer, and I did not recognize some of the programs that were running on my computer. That scared me most. Were these programs that were tracking my keystrokes on my computer or programs I just not remember installing? I knew I had to find a answer and solution fast. The truth is, we can all put up with a slow computer, but very few of us would want others to have access to the information on our computers, but that is exactly what can happen when spyware or malware is loaded on our computers without our knowledge.
