Quick news: Amazon will sell DRM-free music; more Digg gaming; WebStart conference

One more step towards a DRM-free world: Amazon has announced they will be launching a digital music store which will sell only DRM-free MP3s. EMI, which already does business with Amazon, will be the first to offer its catalog in a DRM-free format.

Mashable reports on quite an odd new service called Collactive: it’s funded by Sequoia Capital, which should mean it’s legit, but what they do is simply enable groups to get together and vote for content on social media sites like Digg or YouTube in unison. Perhaps their intentions are good, but if that’s not fertile grounds for gaming, I don’t know what is.

Tomorrow I’ll be speaking on the basics of SEO at the Web.Start conference held in Zagreb, Croatia, along with Joel Spolsky, Alexander Kjerulf and many others. The conference lasts two days, so the site will be updated sporadically in this period.

Your blog seems to have Digg it/Reddit it/etc. buttons. That’s not gaming, right? As I see it, Collactive are offering spruced-up versions of those buttons - that help along users who are not so able with the process of managing their accounts on all these websites. Sounds perfectly okay to me.

@Alan: putting social bookmarking buttons on your site for easy access is one thing. Having a system that lets you group up and collectively Digg stories is another.

Digg itself actively supports the use of Digg this buttons on web sites. On the other hand, there’s a reason why Digg users cannot communicate directly on Digg.

I’m not going to pretend that it’s impossible for Digg users to group up in other ways, but this is too obvious.
