Last.FM starts a video service
Well, not yet, but the news is already out over at R/WW and Mashable. The actual service will go live later today.
We love the idea, because Last.FM is a great service with a huge number of options and a loyal user base. They signed deals with some major labels (EMI, Warner) and many indie ones (Ninja Tune) as well as individual artists (Aphex Twins), so the service definitely won’t be lacking content. Add to that the fact that the videos will be significantly higher quality, with better quality audio (128 Kbps instead of 64), and you’ve got yourself a nice competitor to StumbleVideo and even to Joost.
A most interesting quote comes from Last.FM themselves:
“Last.fm aims eventually to have every music video ever made on the site, from the latest hits to underground obscurities to classics from the past.”
The idea is nice, but I somehow doubt that the users will get all this for free.
