Technorati switches number of links for authority

For a long, long time, Technorati has measured the popularity of a blog by the number of inbound links from other sites. Well, this is probably still the case, but it doesn’t show. In all of the lists and blog details, where number of inbound links once stood, now stands authority. Have a look at the screenshot below:

Technorati authority

It’s hard to say if this is just a cosmetic change where one number has been substituted by a more vague one, or a result of some change in how Technorati measures blog popularity. Technorati’s blog is silent, but some reports of shifts in top lists have emerged, namely from my friends over at Pronet Advertising, which noticed a hefty improvement.

Furthermore, the detail pages for individual blogs underwent a cosmetic change. I can’t really tell you how they looked before, because I don’t have a saved screenshot, but you can see how they look now. Here’s the page for FranticIndustries (no new posts because Technorati doesn’t index them for some reason).

    Stan,

Could you help the blogging community out and try to ferret out what the new Technorati rankings mean? Don’t understand what the shift is about and what are the new ranking criteria replacing or enhancing inbound links. My thanks, Casey Kazan, editor, www.dailygalaxy.com

  5. Stan Schroeder Says:

@Casey: only the devs at Technorati know exactly what the new rankings mean. But my guess is that the number of inbound links, especially from sites which have a lot of links themselves, still plays a great part in it.

I was wondering what happened. The amount of links is the same.
i´m interested in how often do they update the inbound link amount - some links need a long time to be visible in my technorati account…
