Tip: never, ever ask for a reading confirmation
It surprises me that in this day and age some people still send e-mails which require reading confirmation, forcing me to do an additional click, which is not only annoying, but utterly pointless, as I will never OK it.
The thing is, e-mail reading confirmation is an option that doesn’t work. In a perfect world, in which I wouldn’t receive hundreds of e-mails per day, it might make sense for something that’s really urgent. But in the real world, it’s annoying, and in many cases a great way to permanently end up in my junk folder.
I’ll repeat it once more: never, ever, send an e-mail that asks for a reading confirmation.

you can set the application to AUTOMATICALY REPLY or NOT. i use it all the time, and its use is obligatory in our company. and its a great way to be sure that the other party has actually received/read the mail.

Sorry, don’t agree with you Stan. I work in a large corporate with offices all over the world. It is very useful to know when some-one has read an email, especially when they’re in a different time-zone.
So, is your problem with the extra click or the fact that you perceive someone to be somehow spying on your email reading habits? If the former that’s an implementation issue rather than with the idea of read receipts.
Oh, and Steve - I’ve been using email for around 20 years and always found read receipts useful. Don’t really think I’m a newbie - if you don’t have anything useful to add to a debate perhaps you should keep your condescension to yourself.

I agree with SteveJ. Working in a large corporation it is sometimes important to get a read receipt so when someone claims they never got that oh so important email you can go back and prove they did. I work in the IT dept and when we configure outlook for people we automaticly turn on the auto reply to read receipts. It has proven usefull in many situations. Like when your boss claims he never got the email requesting something and you receive the “deleted without read” notification 10 minutes after he said it.
Now outside of the business world it is a little silly and wouldn’t work 95% of the time.
