del.icio.us updates Firefox extension - not quite there yet

When I first heard of del.icio.us back in the day, my immediate thoughts were: oh, nice, I’ll be able to easily synchronize my Firefox bookmarks across several machines. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case. del.icio.us has since become synonymous for social bookmarking, but its Firefox extension and other similar tools didn’t help much with synchronizing your bookmarks.

Now, del.icio.us has updated their del.icio.us Bookmarks extension, which now completely replaces Firefox’ standard bookmarks sidebar, works much faster, and has several other improvements. It caused some raving reviews on the net, but I beg to differ.

First of all, the extension doesn’t support folders/categories, only tags. So forget having the same thing as your old Firefox bookmarks, only synchronized - it just doesn’t work that way. Secondly, I have quite a lot of bookmarks (nothing excessive, between 100 and 200), and the import function simply didn’t work. So, I don’t really see anything about thing Firefox extension that would make people turn into del.icio.us fanatics if they weren’t users already. Those who wish synchronization of their Firefox bookmarks are probably best of using Foxmarks or Bookmarks Synchronizer.

Yeah it’s nothing that hot, I figured as well. Funny how easily arrington get’s hyped up.

  2. Stan Schroeder Says:

@Ali: it’s definitely not very hot. From my point of view, it just messed up my Firefox bookmarks, which I luckily have backed up.

You should really check out GMarks - a firefox add-on for Google Bookmarks. I was in the same boat with you regarding the Del.icio.us add-on that didn’t quite do it for me.

GMarks uses tags, but they can look just like folders - sub folders work as well with tags like ‘Blogs>Tech’. The other great thing is being able to hit cntrl cntrl to pull up a search box for your bookmarks.

I Liked reading this post. Quite some usefull fitness info in it for me :). And after reading this i think you will really like the book Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle. To me this is like the health and fitness bible. Last year i lost almost 25 pounds and gained an inch on my arms in 12 weeks. What you describe here does resemble the book a bit, but there is so much more! I added the link in my name so you dont have to search for it ;). Again, nice post and i hope you keep it up!
