The end of the DRM era?

Like all such big announcements, Steve Jobs’ recent rant about DRM (Digital Rights Management) and its downsides had a purpose and a story behind it. Many believe that this purpose will be revealed today, as EMI group is set to give out a big announcement - with Steve Jobs present.

It’s not all that hard to foresee what’s happening here. Whatever the announcement is, it’s definitely going to be related to online sale of digital music. It can either be some sort of partnership between EMI and Apple, or it’s going to be about EMI ditching DRM, which would confirm earlier rumors. Mike at TechCrunch seems to agree with Wall Street Journal that this is the end of DRM.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve written a lot about DRM. Simply put, I think that DRM is awful. It should be ditched and forever banished to the dark depths of IT history. It reduces value of the content, it’s annoying, it’s insulting to users. Read some of what I’ve written on DRM here, here, here and here.

We’ll see where this goes, but if EMI does drop DRM, and if music sales don’t suffer or even start rising, this might be the best news for music lovers in years. With RIAA’s vehement attitude towards everything that doesn’t make them money and the usual amount of greed that goes with big co territory, I’m sceptical. But I hope for the best. This article will be updated in a couple of hours when EMI’s announcement is officially made.
