Zooppa - advertising goes social
Among the many Web 2.0 services I’ve seen over the years, this one is one of the weirdest. It’s also one of those ideas whose success or failure, in the long run, is impossible to predict - anyone’s guess is as good as mine.
Zooppa works in the following way: they provide the brand; users make the video commercials, Zooppa gives money to the best three ads. The awards are quite hefty, ranging from $500 to $1500, which is definitely a good enough incentive for users to try out their ad-creating skills.
From the creativity/coolness point of view, I love the idea. The service was launched some months ago, and there are already some quite funny videos online, which - with a bit of polishing - could become real commercials. Also, taking the process of copywriting out of the box might yield unexpected results - and unexpected can be good as far as ads go.
However, from the business standpoint, I’m not so sure. Companies are notoriously hard to please when it comes to marketing/advertising. An entire profession - account manager - is invented simply because the people from the creative department can never agree on anything with the suits from the customer company. Will Zooppa be able to actually sell the ads to the companies, and do it consistently over a longer period of time? We’ll see. In the meantime, go over there and check out the videos posted so far.
