Geni raises $10 million in funding

According to TechCrunch, and confirmed by Geni’s CEO David Sacks, the social network that enables users to maintain a family tree, Geni (link to Geni’s website), has received $10 million in funding, with its overal value being estimated at $100 million.

Readers of franticindustries know that I rarely cover the pure business side of Web 2.0, as I like to focus on actual real-life usage and hands-on reviews, but I’m pointing Geni out because it was obvious to me from the second I saw it that it was a great idea. Other startups should learn from the virality of Geni: as you add new people to your family tree, as soon as you add their e-mail address they are sent an invitation to join your family tree, and thus the service grows. No wonder that Geni already has 100.000 users and over 2.000.000 “nodes” created by those users, and I can imagine that they will reach into the millions of users by the end of 2007.

How exactly do they plan to monetize the service remains to be seen, but they definitely got the viral part right.

I really like this product. It’s dirt cheap and has all of the components of a larger notebook. I am computer illiterate, almost, and I found this to be very user friendly. It even has a web cam already installed which I haven’t figured out how to use yet. I bought my son-in-law one and he absolutely loves it. He has a $3,000 notebook but chooses to take this one (acer) to work with him. Everyone who sees this computer asks us where we got it. I can just imagine how nice it would be for students, from junior high to college, to help them with their homework. It doesn’t have a cd or dvd player but you can buy an attachment for $60 to listen to cds and you can attach your dvd player to the acer and watch your movies. It has a battery life of about 6 hours, which is nice. I can’t say enough about this product, as you can read. Go buy it right now and thank me later. Thanks for the opportunity to push this product.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  33. brittany murphy dies Says:

Sorry for the huge review, but I’m really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

This netbook is overall the ideal package. I was looking at Macbooks and couldn’t justify the price. This is a second laptop for me as my older one is slowly dying and I want to bring a small one to work more frequently. The size is perfect for me. Fits into a small packback or tote bag easily and I don’t usually bring the cord as the battery life is 6 hours. The mouse pad is a little small but scrolls, zooms, and rotates like the macbooks do with the same movements. I read a lot of PDFs and documents like that without any problems. The webcam is cool. I didn’t think I would use the bluetooth much but I have used it a few times to sync my blackberry and exchange programs and large files with coworkers. This computer is supposed to be for work and studying only, but I have tons of room for music and pics if my old laptop should finally crap out.
I didn’t do a ton of shopping around but I think this is the nicest netbook I have seen so far at a great price. I really recommend it highly.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case. Have you tried the ipad? you can get one free at FreshGiftCard.com
