[...] So, I was reading the latest post from franticindustries where he talks a about paying for currently free online applications. He had posted his list of services he’d continue using even if he had to pay and received a lot of feedback that he’s gone through and analyzed in his post. I think the results and conclusions he posts are interesting and wanted to highlight a few points. The question is, however, worth asking, because this situation may change in the future. Users’ dependency on online applications will grow. AdSense might not always be the major driving force behind the Web 2.0 phenomenon. [...]

@Bull3t: if you're confused about the numbers, apps that have the same amount of votes share the same spot. Something like Olympic medals (;.

I posted only the other day about comparisons with Blogger and WordPress (http://bull3t.blogspot.com/2007/02/blogger-vs-wordpress.html) on my blog (http://bull3t.blogspot.com) and how I thought that WordPress should still be free and Blogger should be more like WordPress but I suppose if they make the service too good then people will have to start paying for it unless they can find another way to make money from it.

@Ali: you hit the nail on the head. It works both ways: if a product is free, then you can't really expect proper support. You can also expect that the service will disappear one day because of lack of funding. Or that they will change it in such a way that it will become unusable. But, if you pay for something, you will expect excellence, support, commitment. Especially if you're a business user - then you don't really want free stuff. You want quality. So, while most of the free stuff on the web will stay free forever, some new apps and services will have to take the other route.

Well there are some services I don't even use so I wouldn't pay for them regardless.

But if I "do" end up paying up for some services they better come with more perks like 24/7 email support and maybe a premium version of the service.

Money is after all money and when you put it down anybody expects something more in return.
