…and that’s why Joost won’t allow user uploaded videos

When I first heard of Joost, I though it was going to be a YouTube competitor. Then I tried Joost out, and saw that it’s actually quite different from YouTube - it’s a competitor to old school television networks, only on the Internet. The creators of Joost are also the creators of Skype, and Joost’s logic follows the logic of Skype. Skype, as we all know, is a competitor to telecoms: it enables you to make phone calls, only on the Internet.

As reported by Wall Street Journal and (for those of you who don’t have Wall Street Journal subscription) on TechCrunch, media giant Viacom has signed a deal with Joost, only weeks after it ordered Google to remove around 100.000 videos from YouTube.

The message is clear: the big companies like control, and they don’t like users generating and uploading content because it’s hard to control. Joost could have added user-generated and user-submitted content to their service, but they probably deliberately chose not to, because deals such as this one would be much harder to make.

Still, this shows what the BigCos of the world are doing wrong. The reason YouTube, and back in the day, Napster, have become popular, is because they give the people what they want. The big media companies are not giving the people what they want: they’re giving them what they, the companies, think they should have. People will laugh at Google and YouTube thinking that this is a big letdown for them and a huge boost for Joost, and in the short term they’re right. I still think that Viacom and others are fighting a battle that cannot be won. The Internet will never become television - the television will become the Internet.

[…] Henry “I used to be a famous Wall Street analyst” Blodget isn’t so sure whether Joost is the right model, and neither is Stan Schroeder. The always insightful Mark Cuban has some thoughts about Google and video. My friend Scott Karp wrote recently on the topic of YouTube, online video and monopoly. And Steve Bryant at GoogleWatch has an excellent list of things that Google could do to make YouTube not just look better but work better. Well put. Joost and Youtube are not the same.

Now if Joost wasn’t just streaming live channels… then maybe it would spark my interest. Kind of like having an online PVR where you could access any show at any time, and just stream it would be awesome. But due to copyright laws, and greed for more money, that will never happen, other than a few crappy shows nobody watches anyway.

  3. Viacom sues Google and YouTube for $1 billion - franticindustries. Says:

[…] Viacom says to BBC that YouTube’s “business model, which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws.” Unfortunately for us, the consumers, most other media powerhouses’ online business model is doing nothing and waiting for someone to sue or offering DRM-infested, expensive content that nobody wants. To Viacom’s creadit, they at least signed up a deal with Joost, showing that there is a business model they support. […]

[…] According to a report from Ars Technica and Wall Street Journal, Joost has signed a deal with CBS, which is their second deal with a media powerhouse (after the deal with Viacom), but a first one with a major US broadcaster. […]

I agree: “Television will become the Internet”. It’s hapenning much faster than Hollywood thinks. The InterStream association is effectively setting rate limits, as definied by Hollywood, to 300kbps for BitTorrent and Joost. So, with this technology, TV over the Internet will happen almost automatically and there is little that can happen to stopy it. I expect that Joost, with EdgeStream, YouTube, using Rivulet, will try to compete but the ISPs will have ultimate control in the end.
