Joost update and Mac version alpha available

The buzzworthy TV-over-the-internet service, Joost, which lets you watch free TV using P2P protocols to download data, and which I’ve had the pleasure to review a couple of weeks ago, has a new version out: 0.7.4. It’s still beta, it’s still invite only, but it has a number of new features and bug fixes. These include the addition of local support, several cosmetic changes to the interface, and resolving the problems some users had with firewalls and virus scanners.

More importantly, Joost alpha for Mac is available, so Mac lovers (or at least a small number of them, until Joost goes public) will also be able to enjoy free television. If the alpha testing goes well, Joost beta for Mac should appear next week. If you’re registered as a Joost beta user, you can download the installation version here.

This version is just what it says: an alpha. So, users should expect many quirks, among which are slow startup, flickering in the Dock during startup, barely readable text in some places, and the occasional crash here and there.

Linux users will wait just a little bit longer for their free TV fix. Although the official Joost FAQ says that a Linux version is ‘in the works’, there’s no word on a Linux alpha just yet.
