10 Pligg sites worth visiting

I’ve already done an analysis of the most prominent Pligg sites I could find and their foreseeable future. However, I’m constantly finding (or receiving by mail, keep it up, I appreciate it) new, interesting Pligg-based sites which have gone the extra mile to move away from the standard Pligg templates and truly become a community.

Here’s a list of 10 great Pligg based sites I’ve found recently. The criteria by which they were chosen were originality of the design and overall quality of the site. Of course, this list is definitely not exhaustive - I’m sure that there are many more good Pligg sites, so if you have one, send it my way.

*For those not familiar with Pligg, it’s an open source, free CMS which enables you to create a social content (Digg-like) site with little or no programming knowledge
.

advertlover.com

advertlover.jpgAdvertlover is a good example how one can distance a site from a template with minimal changes. The site is obviously based on Pligg’s Mollio Beat template, however just a tiny amount of Photoshopping and it achieved its own identity (although a change of colors would do even more in this direction). Put that together with a nice idea - a community site based on sharing cool commercials - and you have a nice little social content site.

www.agentb.com

agentb.jpgWhen you put in a lot of effort in your Pligg site, this is the result. The minimalistic and very usable design, great organization of elements on the page, and the drawn bee mascot of the site all reveal a serious approach. The site is based on sharing coupons, free stuff, rebates - basically, all sorts of good deals. The community hasn’t grown big enough yet, but if any site deserves to have one, it’s this site.

www.dealigg.com

dealigg.jpgAnother social content site based on exchanging deals, Dealigg differentiates itself by using 2 columns for the main content, which works surprisingly well. The voting buttons are non-obtrusive, which makes the whole community part of the site seem more of an afterthought, but that’s ok - on some sites, content is equally important as the community.

www.gamelemons.com/squeeze

gamelemons.jpgGame Lemons is a great site by itself - it collects game reviews from the net and puts them in one place for your convenience. However, the authors didn’t stop there - they added a social content component so that users can also submit stories and vote which of them are the best. This is a great line of reasoning and I think we’ll see it more and more - sites which already have a purpose and a readership adding social content as just another cherry on the pie. As far as design goes, Game Lemons is as professional as they come, and the Pligg elements are seamlessly integrated into it.

www.hugg.com

hugg.jpgHugg is a source for user-submitted green (environment, ecology, sustainable development) news, and if Care2 is any reference, users who like these themes respond well to social collaboration and communities. However, the fact that Care2 has a pretty huge community while covering similar subjects might be one of Hugg’s biggest problems. Nevertheless, the site is a nice departure from the look of most other Pligg sites, and it seems to be having a decent-sized community already.

www.pickstation.com.

pickstation.jpgWith a clear and simple yet distinctive design, and a good idea (users send links to free MP3s and vote on them) Pickstation has what it takes to become a true community. It’s a great resource for indie music lovers, and its color scheme is a good example of how you can take Pligg and create something original.

pixelgroovy.com

pixelgroovy.jpgThe authors of Pixelgroovy obviously share my notion that a social content site should do one thing, and do it well. Thus, the theme of Pixelgroovy are tutorials, and although it’s nowhere explicitly said that these tutorials must have something to do with web design or graphics, it’s usually the case. Unfortunately, the site isn’t really bursting with activity, but it can still be a useful resource.

scoreguru.com

scoreguru.jpgAnother site which managed to create a distinctive look with some simple changes to one of Pligg’s basic templates, Scoreguru is dedicated to sports, and judging by the number of votes on the items, it seems to be one of the best visited Pligg-based sites out there. How did sports fans recognize this site, I don’t know, but it shows that you don’t have to be tied to IT or technology to succeed in the social content arena.

www.videosift.com

videosift.jpgVideosift has the reputation of being the most successful Pligg based site, and it’s well deserved. The site barely resembles Pligg, and it has many new options, including sidebar widgets and a chatbox called SiftTalk (which is well visited and should probably be upgraded to a forum). Plus, videos are the in thing lately, so creting a community around them is only logical. Amongst the many struggling young Pligg-based communities, Videosift stands as a bright example of success, and I hope they continue growing.

    http://www.highvibeit.com - news that resonates

( ( ( high Vibe it ) ) ) is a site geared around sharing Positive News and stories. The founding ideas are highly related to the “Law of Attraction” teaching that like attracts like, and that you are what you think about… so why not focus on Positive events and stories?

The positive energy will attract more, and all Users in the communit benefit from drawing out (attracting) the EVERY DAY Positives from the world around us.

  20. socialham.com » Blog Archive » Top 5 Ways to Launch Your Digg Clone Says:

[…] Alright for starters this will the last Digg related post for awhile! I mean jeez looking at last few and I feel worse than the apple touting "top ten list loving" fan boys that dominate the site. However having said that Digg is certainly attracting more attention then usual as copy cats begin to pop up (some very fat copy cats). Can you blame them? They took a very basic voting concept and executed it perfectly while keeping up with any traffic surges its army of users brought. So how can the small guy get a piece? Well first off don’t try to be Digg, sorry they have already done it and can do it much better than you. Instead your Digg clone should be niche specific like some of these web sites. Creating a Digg clone that aligns with your main demographic is a great place to start. What are they passionate about? What sites do they visit and talk about? Wouldn’t you love to find out.. […]

Blatant self-promotion (yet with intent of sharing info):
MILRUMINT is a good example of a site that still has lots of tweaking to do before being as well customized as some of the listed sites. …but I’m working on it during study-breaks in my grad course.

  42. Dave Says:

Hey 9 months later and most of these sites are not doing any better than they were when you did the review. Free Software Daily ( http://www.fsdaily.com ), on the other hand, launched less than 5 months ago and has already surpassed videosift (which is the biggest site of those you have listed above) in terms of users.

FSDaily can no longer rely on the poor code base that is provided by the pligg team. We have almost finished a new pligg module for Drupal that turns Drupal into a digg clone. The code will also be released under the GPL so everyone else will benefit from our work. Meanwhile, the pligg devs appear to be selling their terrible work in order to finance a new version of pligg that will most likely be licensed under a different license that will probably prevent non-commercial use only unless you pay a fee of some kind.

  43. Stan Schroeder Says:

@Dave: that’s good to know, good luck with your site.
