Digg redesigns; finally puts header to good use

Digg, the mother of all social content websites, has been slightly redesigned. The changes are subtle but not only aesthetic in nature, and actually add to the functionality of the site.

The most important of these changes is dividing Digg’s content to news, videos and podcasts, which is a great move that will probably drive away a hefty amount of “hey, it’s fun” content from the news section of the site. The videos are thumbnailed and open in Digg’s own video window (with the original source embedded inside).

Secondly, the recognizable header of the site which has until now served only as an aesthetic element, has been put to use (unlike on some other sites), as you can now find all of the categories and subcategories there. The menu bar on the left that served for that purpose until now has been removed. This is also a great move, as you now have a much better overview of the categories but even more space is reserved for the actual news than before.

Finally, on the right side of the page you can now see the top 10 news in your current category, which is a nice touch.

All in all, although this is just a minor redesign, it’s thought through and well done, as it improves Digg, without reducing the functionality or the aesthetic side of the site. Good job.
